I beg of those of you who love metal and all its crap sub-genres, listen to some jazz. Not Kenny G, he's not jazz. I mean John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, those bebop cats as well as swing era shit like Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Chick Webb, etc.

Listen to Giant Steps by John Coltrane. The changes and harmonies will make your head explode.

I cant stand jazz as a music I'd listen, but I respect the artists like Coltrane for their skill and dedication, and I respect jazz a genre.

I like a little bit of jazz but I can't listen to it all the time otherwise it'd drive me crazy! Same with any genre though really.

Albums:

John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Duke Ellington/Charlie Mingus/Max Roach - Money Jungle
Oscar Peterson Trio - The Trio
Oscar Peterson Trio - We Get Requests
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Miles Davis - The Birth of the Cool

That's a very small sampling of some of the best bebop and piano trio stuff in my collection.

For swing, check out (all of these names are leaders of big bands):

Duke Ellington
Count Basie
Benny Goodman
Chick Webb
Louis Armstrong
Billy Eckstein (had an amazing big band, many of whom went on to found the bebop movement)

I'll post more as I think of them.
