Constantly minimizes to desktop

Postby changbang » Sun Apr 08, 07 7:09 pm

Has anyone else run into this problem? I bought Deus Ex: GOTY through Steam, and every time the game starts up it periodically minimizes itself to the taskbar. I click on the program in the taskbar to bring it back up, only to have it minimize again a few seconds later, and I can do this about three, four times before my computer locks up. This doesn't seem to affect the sound, though, as it keeps playing in the background. I'm running the game on XP with an Nvidia GeForce FX 5900XT, but let me know if you need additional info. As far as I can tell this doesn't happen when the game's running in safe mode, so I'm betting it's a rendering thing.

Anyone able to lend a helping hand?

I heard steam didn't really work proper with Deus Ex in some cases... However, could be its just an error in your deusex.ini, so could you attach it? (I'm not totally sure if Steam changed Deus Ex's directory structure, but if it hasn't, then you should be able to find your deusex.ini in DeusExSystem)

Edit: Eh, also attach your Deusex.log, which is located in DeusExSystem as well

Steam hasn't changed the structure of the directories. I'd like to know, however, can you launch DeusEx.exe when Steam is closed? Or does it open Steam?

Hey, it turns out that I was running Folding@Home in the background, which is supposed to use spare CPU cycles for its calculations. I turned it off, and as far as I can tell Deus Ex runs perfectly now. I'll be sure to follow up if anything else happens, but thanks for the quick replies. You're more on top of things than Steam support ever was.

Can you explore the CD, copy all files to your Harddisk, compress them into a .zip or .rar, and upload them somewhere? (And then I mean the Deus Ex Steam CD)

I think people download DX from Steam, not buy CDs like usually.

Does the STEAM Deus Ex support popular mods such as DXMTL, etc.?

If this is the case, changbang, could you upload the download somewhere? I really need it.

I dunno, but I guess Steam controls that somehow. I'll maybe buy it, $9 isn't much.

Free > Cheap

No, Free = 0, and Cheap > 0

Therefore, Free < Cheap.

Yes, because DX was developed in a time, where gamers still believed in their freedom and anonymity, especally on the internet. Steam with its contolling behaviour doesn't match into that picture.
