OpenGL Vs D3D8

Postby Shinobi » Mon Oct 01, 07 11:54 am

Hi.

I've been trying both the openGL and D3D8 renderers (which I got from here), and I've noticed a slight improvement in my fps by using the openGL renderer (which is odd, as everywhere I've read tells me that D3D is faster).

I have (don't laugh!) an Nvidia GeForce MX 420 PCI (yes, old PCI) video card, windows XP pro sp1, and am running Deus Ex version 1112fm (the latest one).

Also, I have the latest drivers for every component in my PC that has updatable drivers.

Now - my problem is this.

When I use D3D8, I have NO graphical glitches. I have al details set to minimum, shiny surfaces off and 16bit textures on. I set up my deusex.ini d3d8 settings by www.planetdeusex.com (or maybe it was www.deusexgaming.com I forget) and the [A] KB page.

This results in shitty graphics, but not bad fps for the age of my pc (I get around 20fps during a fight, 45-50 otherwise).

Now, when I use openGL, I get around 35fps in fight, 60fps otherwise. BUT... I get weird graphical glitches.
The only one I've really noticed is how if I go anywhere which is high up (e.g. standing on a walkway in DXMP_Silo, or looking outta the tower in Area51Bunker) I get huge black patches impairing my view. (I can add a screeny if needed).

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

OpenGL must be faster, and D3D8 is called "experimental".

A screeny would be good :)

From experimenting with all drivers now and then, I think that OpenGL is a little bit faster than D3D8, but a bit more unstable. Seeing as my comp is a unstable piece of crap itself, I'm forced to use D3D8, as OpenGL gives too many errors in my case. (normal D3D doesn't run properly at all, so don't mention it :P)

Anyways, like Dae said, a screenshot would be appreciated so we could see what you exactly mean. :P

Odd - it's fixed itself.

I downloaded the renderer again, and installed - only to find that the dude who makes them had uploaded a slightly newer version.
