when I try to set brightness to 1.00, it still remains at 0.5

Does that with me sometimes, do it through the DX.ini I would try (It's in there somewhere!) Just set it to 1.0. If it's already at 1.0, then change it to something else, load dx and try and change it again.
Full brightness is very bad on IceWorld, it blinds you, literally!

Use 'brightness' command then (or set in the .ini file). It happens on crappy video cards

Also: Some video/game setting options don't have any effect in Multiplayer.
I think I remember something about how you can't set the colour bits from 16 to 32 and vice versa, and also set the quality settings at the same time, or something.

In game I can never edit those settings, have to exit the server to sort things out

Yeh, I got it sorted out.
