USB Game Controller won't work with any games.

Just got an Xbox style controller for my PC, it picked it up as a 4 axis 12 button etc, so Windows recognizes it, but it won't work with any games.
Games tried:
Max Payne
Hitman 2
Call of Duty: United Offensive Multiplayer

It's my brothers, he threw out the case and everything. Doesn't say model.
