i just got a new computer..duelcore 2.3 , 2gigs of ram a 8800gt card and windows vista.it runs every game i have great but Deus Ex.
when i run Deus Ex now,it all starts up and looks great but its supper choppy, like bad lag but my ping and fps read fine.
is this an issue with vista? do any of you guys run DX on vista w/out probs like this ?
i tried setting it to run in winXP mode but it made no difference.
can anyone offer me any advice? does DX work on vista?

Try Win 98 mode instead of WinXP.

Also set it to only run one a single core, so it's not using both cores, as this messes it up. Right click it's process in Task Manager, click Set affinity -> Set to #1 core.

If Kaiden's method works, I could give you a work around. (so that you don't have to set it every time you start up DX)

When i got my new comp with vista, it did this exact same thing, being choppy and all, but, for some reason, after about 3-4 weeks, it stopped doing that and plays just fine. Dunno if that helps

This is probably a weird idea, but try changing the renderer? I get horrific lag with OpenGL but really smooth game play with DirectX.

Like what Cozmo said it sounds like a renderer problem.
Try switching your renderer, and getting latest drivers for your GFX card.

oddly enough I have a problem similar to this. It does it on the original UT as well as Dx, I think it's something involving the engine.. the game goes fast, then normal, fast again.. etc.. Trying to run a server is out of this world as player complain of this lag even though they're ping is fine.. I think its due to my pc though.. Anywho, if you figure ur problem out, I'll probably use it to fix mine..

my friend, Ded, told me recently how he had fixed the problem: you need to launch the SDK (UnrealEd) on background and then launch the game. The game should work fine after that.

Explained fully. (Screenshots etc) Try changing your renderer.
