Headset only plays in one ear.

When I plug ANY headphones in, they only work in one ear. I tried to plug my monitor (Which is a LCD TV) into my box and my headphones into the jack on my monitor, and still I get this result.

What the fuck is going on.

But if I twist it JUST right, I can get sound through both ears but the quality isn't perfect.

Check to make sure you don't have dirt on the contacts of the headphone jack.

Also, try putting a cotton bud in the headphone socket with the power off, see if that helps.

New soundcard time?

I got a SB PCI 128 (circa 1997) I can throw your way for the princely sum of £5 including UK delivery.

I'll chance it with a £20 Creative X-Fi solution.

This used to happen with my huge mother-fucking giangatic ugly-looking headphones. Whether it does with my laptop, remains to be seen. But I think it's a problem with the headphones themselves. Still fucks me off...

My non-technical technical support idea?

Twiddle the cable on the offending ear, and if you manage to get it in its "sweet spot", sellotape the cable in that position.

Except you can't listen to anything with Bass, so remember to turn your wave down in sound settings.
