Help: compression

Postby Dae » Thu Feb 24, 05 9:51 pm

You all probably heard about my idea - to cut single player off, make multiplayer only version of Deus Ex, that is many times lighter than original, to go and spam other (mainly, UT community) forums with this link to enlarge our little community by bringing other players.
I've currently finished the light edition, installed MTL, some additional mods like mapvote and etc, changed logo and reduced its size, corrected docs.
Closer to the topic. How do you think, which format of compression should i choose?
7z gives 120 MB size, but requires pretty good computer (not proven), plus no installer.
Zip gives 150 MB size, but with it we can make a friendly installer.
Or both, so user can select what to download ? Maybe this way is a bit stupid, installer isn't that important thing or... well what YOU think?

judging by the speeds of most connections these days, i think it would probably be feesable to use teh ZIP version, and distribute it,
after all, its only 30Meg of a difference, which isnt that much to a broadband connection
anyone with a windows OS has the ability to unZIP files, and there isnt really a user left who cannot uncompress a ZIP

therefore, ZIP is the better option here

Both archive types are supported by all known op systems, and even if its Win 98 that has no default unpacker, the installer should load anyway.

Methinks it's good...

Its not really something special  its just like WinZIP but it can compress better so the file gets smaller then a ZIP file(i think... )

.RAR's are generally used for gigantic files. Makes them alot smaller than .zip. But with small files, there is next to no difference.

My view is to put both up and give them the option. :)

RAR is worse than 7z. In RAR size is 138. In Zip 150. In 7z 120.
And i'm going to put both types, i've decided, because we shouldn't forget that there are a lot of 56k'ers and, for example, most of people in my country never heard that there is something different to modem.
And if some 56k'er downloads the game and gets used to it, there is a huge chance that he'll think about getting something better, because there appeared one more reason to change connection. He gets better connection if possible, gets used more and more, realizes that he cannot live without a daily dose of Deus :P

Sounds like my life story 8)
Yeh put both up if you have the bandwidth, otherwise just put the zip up, a 56k'er downloads stuff overnight really so think about the downloads in batches of 7 hours, an extra 30 meg won't really make too much difference. And if they've already commited to downloading something that big then I wouldn't worry about it

130-150 meg is still ratehr large

and that 20 meg of a difference could save alot of time
