I have windows Live messenger installed right now on XP-64 bit and its actually on right now. One reason I don't use a 32-bit system is because I have 8GB of RAM and I know how to make use of that....
XP-64 bit > XP-32 bit > Vista 32 bit > Vista 64 bit
Performance Wise, you get more performance on XP 64-bit than 32-bit. I've benchmarked this and know the architecture behind the OS and the hardware. The performance you get is between 7 - 30% depending on the program. Crytek even posted that you get a 22 - 25% performance increase in Crysis on 64-bit vs 32 bit OS.
When you don't want 64 bit, the 32-bit XP has come a long way and it works for games. Vista 32 bit gives you a Performance Hit of 20% in games due to the graphic card spliting the task between accelerating the game and the desktop. Vista 64 bit has driver issues and many still are prototypes that were not covered in Vista SP1. At anyrate, Direct X 10.1 will give you a large performance hit...specially when you have one of those 1680 x 1050 LCD monitors and are forced to RUN all games, even those that don't need it at x4 Anti Alliasing.
What compatability issues are you refering to on XP 64 bit? I've tested over 30 games and they all work fine. I have a good set of drivers for all my parts on XP-64 bit? Of course, each person is different. Maybe Im lucky that I havent ran into heavy problems with XP-64 bit. I know a few years ago it was a nightmare to find a decent set of 64-bit drivers.
