LittleBigPlanet delayed

Postby clyzm » Sat Oct 25, 08 1:13 pm

One of the fall's most anticipated video games for the PlayStation 3, Sony's "LittleBigPlanet," had to be yanked from shelves at the last minute Monday because it might accidentally offend Muslims.

"One of the background music tracks that was licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Quran," Sony said in a statement Monday. "We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologize for any offense this may have caused."

The piece of music in question is "Tapha Niang" by the Grammy-winning Malian musician Toumani Diabaté, who sings and plays a West African stringed instrument called the kora.

Devotional music doesn't raise eyebrows in many Muslim countries, including several in West Africa including Mali, but it's a no-no for some strict Sunnis, who frown upon instrumented music of any sort.

"LittleBigPlanet" had been scheduled to hit shelves in North American on Oct. 21, the day after Sony's surprise announcement.

There's two ways of looking at this:

-It wasn't a big deal. Some guy got offended and sent a civil complaint about the game, Sony removes the track, maybe because they don't want negative reviews, or to show that they care.

-It is Sony's fault for being risky when it comes to customer attention. It will take them longer to reproduce the game not to mention the artist who made the track will not have it in the game, because of a single complaint.

What do you gents reckon?

All a bit silly really, I know it's not credible to cater to the majority, but only a faction of muslim's would have been pissed off, the Sunni's.

Lets face it I would be pissed off if I was the award winning Malian who put my heart and soul into producing probably an epic piece

but it's a no-no for some strict Sunnis, who frown upon instrumented music of any sort.

Any clarification on what this actually means btw?

The song had these two lines, which are apparently offensive to Islamic communities, as the article above says (and why):

"Every soul shall have the taste of death." and "All that is on earth will perish."

Now personally, I do not find it offensive. I don't think many people would, I think the only people who will be truly offended by this are Muslims. I have no problem with that, I don't find it offensive myself because to me, the statements are true.

But, as far as I'm concerned, if it insults a religion then yes, it should be removed.

I don't think it's offensive to muslims if it's just words from the book itself.

I honestly don't know how it's offensive, some Muslim just said that the Islamic community finds it very offensive due to it mixing "music and words from the Holy Qu'ran."

I can't really get an understand of why it's offensive from that sentence. Does it use Islamic music as well as words from the Qu'ran or does it mix music with words from the Qu'ran?

Either way, I fail to see how it is offensive but if it is, then yes, I personally believe it should be removed. LittleBigPlanet is going to have much more controversy surrounded by it once it's released, I'm sure.

I was considering buying a PS3 for this game alone. I have a hunger for it no longer.

I think Muslims should shut their mouth, clearly they don't care about the butchering of other religions in many titles. I think Resistance was the only game shunned for taking place in a real-life church, and they didn't exactly have to remove the church from the game. What are Muslims going to do, seriously, what are they going to do?

This is why shit like 9/11 happened. Because of the worlds ignorance to religion. I am not a religious purpose but at least I am open-minded and smart enough to know not to fuck with religion.

Maybe if the people in power learnt that...

Yeah I find that weird.

Christians are pissed all the time about video games, like Guitar Hero, they wanted it gone cus of the "satanist tracks"

Guitar Hero didn't comply

I think Sony's rather idiotic response to remove the track from the game is partially due to the fact that Muslims are already pissed off with the Danish cartoons and the Fitna video, no adding fuel to the fire.

Religion shouldn't be an exception when it comes to who you can and who you can't fuck

Tolerance is the key word here, for both religion to tolerate art and vice versa (unless the art or religion is wholly offensive)

Seriously, I'm religious but I'll still plow my way happily through 666 the number of the beast on guitar hero 3
