New graphics card

Postby James » Fri Aug 21, 09 9:13 am

Looking for a graphics card below £160, will last me until 2011 (it is inevitable that DirectX11 is going to make a full arrival on this year) and has proven to have great performance, life and has enough power to max out DirectX9.

Included incase you ask, as I have no idea about hardware compatibility:
http://www.imagocentre.com/images/45/board_15.jpg

The reason why I'm looking for a new graphics card is because even though the 8600GT 512MB I have has been a very good girl to me (and an obvious choice over the 8800 GT at the time over £50 cheaper), I'm aware that it'll be made a little redundant next year with increasing boundries being pushed onto the new level of graphics. Until the mainstream DirectX 11 cards are created I'd need a card that'll blast through any DirectX 9 game anything throws in my way before I have to use Windows 7. I do have more than enough money to get the GTX295 but I'm not dishing out £345 for a graphics card let alone wait for the the new version of that which MIGHT be cheaper. (I'd rather dish out for a GTX275 or GTX285 anyway, infact I might do that)

You don't seem to even suggest Radeon cards; do you dislike the brand?

The 4850 I've got is still going strong but I would wait for the next refresh in October until making a decision. If it were up to me I'd get a 275 or a 4890.

Since you had/have a 8600 GT I am assuming you are running a 350 - 450 watt power supply?

I dislike the drivers. Friend has a 4890 and uncle has 4870.

Oh shit forgot about power supply. Uncle just told me its 600w. edit: it's running at 800w i dunno wtf is going on lol

260 is a basic card, i have it and it laughs at every game i throw at it
dont need the 280 or 285 or above unless you have 1680 x 1050 monitor resolution or higher
4850 x2 is a good choice
275 is a bit too much for its price, imho
9800 gtx is also a nice card

VERY interested.

dont need the 280 or 285 or above unless you have 1680 x 1050 monitor resolution or higher

Noted, I'm running 1440x900 and I'm definitely not upping my resolution.

4850 x2 is a good choice

x2?, is that a name for it or SLI?

275 is a bit too much for its price, imho

Ouch

9800 gtx is also a nice card

Interested in + version but I don't know if it's really any better

The plus has got a few more frames on the 9800GTX and consumes less power. X2 is 2 4870's in Crossfire.

the 4850 x2 is one card, its about the same price as a 280 and has 2GB/512bit. $219.99 here

i've used both 9800 GTX and GTX+. GTX+ has a higher mem clock and is easily overclocked, its comparable to a single 4870.

the reason i said 275 is kinda overpriced is because over here its about $249.99, while its basically a 260 (which is $179.99) with 240 cores instead of 216. not that huge of a difference

Well, to be pedantic it's actually two cards in a single-card structure.

Asus P5KC, exactly the one I have with Q6600.

Initially I had 9800 GTX (not +) but recently I replaced it with a GTX 285. I didn't notice much improvement in quality of L4D graphics, but it doesn't lag anymore when there are a lot of zombies in open areas.

It gave a performance boost to GTA IV though.

You would like to play games? Then HD 4870 or HD 4890 is the right card for you  My current system with HD 4870 1GB runs every new game with high fps and 1680x1050 resolution. HD 4890 is better than NVIDIA GTX 275 and costs much less. Just because every new/shitty game is tagged around with NVIDIA ads, doesn't mean ATI is shit. In fact, it has much better pricing/performance, although NVIDIA's GTX 295 is the fastest card out there. Still I don't think you're willing to pay few more hundreads extra, just to get few more virtual dick candy mark points in 3DMark

Ha

The pro Nvidia crowd seems to be bothering me aswell. For the record though the 260 is comparable to the 4870, while the 4850 is comparable to the 9800 GTX+. It really depends on the game though.

As I said earlier rather than getting the new card now you should probably wait a month and see if the prices drop on the higher end parts since the new DX11 cards should be around that time or at least some news on performance and pricing.

No, GTX295 is not the fastest card out there, an ASUS brand of 4890 beat it in G3D mark by 100. I'd like to play games but it seems the 4890 cannot play games like Street Fighter 4 above 4x anti aliasing while my friends old 8800GTX could? I'm sorry for you boiling in rage. The 4870 is what I'd want to try.

The pro Nvidia crowd seems to be bothering me aswell.

It's just the confusion with drivers that piss me off, I'm not being elitist to graphics cards I'm just only interested in less hassle.

Anti-aliasing is overrated. Graphics are overrated. Try playing a fucking game without them, then see how much you miss your goddamn high graphics.

This is coming who spent years playing old games with shit graphics.

And I have a uhh.."Geforce GTS 250". Seems to work ok, atleast Crysis on the highest settings, I don't really play many high demand games though :<

the GTS 250 is a cooler version (read: exact copy) of the 9800 GTX+, so it's AIIIIIIIGHT

i'm not a nvidia fanboy i love the 4870 x2 and plan on getting it soon

also please there is a difference between 'fastest card' and 'most powerful card' and the most powerful one is the mars 295 while the fastest is the 4890

my friend played a lot of far cry 2 on his computer with his 4870, got around 40 FPS with all high settings. he switched to a 9800 GTX+ and got maybe 1-3 frames lower.

too long; didn't read get a reliable card that you can trust, if ATI get a 4870/4850 x2, if nvidia get a 260/275

ATI releases drivers almost every month for CCC.

If that isn't what you're looking for you can always use 3rd party drivers such as the Omega ones.

As for anti aliasing in higher resolutions seems to be pointless unless you are playing a game 1 foot away from the monitor to notice it.
