Amazing. If what they showed is real and will actually work, we'll be really close to Virtual Reality

Wow. What a annoying voice.

Games will be much more expensive with this technology because desigining games will have to be more thorough.

Looks amazing in comparison though.

Game's price have almost nothing to do with the expenses for develop it. DNF, developed 14 years -> 60€ - MW3 developed 2 years (of whic 3 days spent coding) -> 60€

Impressive work but they've basically shown nothing in the last year except this converter. They don't answer anything beyond this static terrain.

They tried to pitch to THQ Australia, in the Q&A section Mr. Dell did not know what CPU cache is and couldn't answer questions on animation, transparency, etc.

Games will be much more expensive with this technology because desigining games will have to be more thorough.

Depends on the limits/ambition of they can reach with the technology. If you listened to 51 seconds into the video he gives a fact about money being poured into technology to improve polygon count. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00gAbgBu8R4#t=51

Good point, so the money they spend on trying to improve the polygon count will be used to pay the additional money the artists would require. So in essence, there shouldn't be a diference in price.

Impressive that they've done this, and can still render with decent frame rates right now.

Going to be at least a decade imo, before this goes big, and has a large selection of hardware to support it.

This sounds potentially mind-blowing. My question is simple (and probably irrelevant!): Why not pay a texture artist/games designer to at least show us a rock or a dog or something?? Instead of repeating "we are not a games company" as an excuse.

If this is real and can be done with realistic hardware then OMFG I can't wait.

because they are not a games company, they're developing an engine.

pretty impressive modelling nonetheless

can't wait till this goes big, infinite detail = more time spent modeling and texturing = more jobs open up

The engine in its current state is amazing for architectural 3d rendering, it's depressing me adamant that it'll be released as game engine first.

Notch (Minecraft developer/that guy who has made a fuck ton of money on an un-released game) has spoken out about this. He assumes they're voxels and not point clouds.

OMG NIEC, after 2-3 years of the engines release, it should go free, UDK and Cry engine will both go BEWM

Thread suddenly gone too technical for me. Can somebody explain in layman's terms how this is "unlimited"....? It may just be my crap logical skills but I've never been able to grasp the concept of infinity.

Take some Lego blocks and build an house. You can give the house a limited amount of detail, like with polygons on most of the game engines out there.

Take some micro lego blocks and build another house. You have more details but you're not totally free, like with voxels

Take some Play-doh and you've unlimited details for your house. No polygons\shape to follow or any size to obbey to.

Better example: Imagine a graphics engine with each thing built up with small little dots instead of shapes.

Saw his post a while back; really pissed me off. Notch needs to stop throwing his newfound weight around. Regarding his technical capabilities, he thought lighting was impossible in MC not too long ago. The current standard lighting in the game is actually someone else's mod that he incorporated.

He assumes every point will be stored and drawn individually (what) and includes open space in his equasion, making like 95% of it air. Disregard everything he has to say about this.

Probably they are using a compression system for group up similiar atoms and for sure atoms are used ONLY for what's really displayed (means that for have a footprint in the sand\destroy something in pieces you'll have to add new atoms). For sure it has hardware limits

I wish some expert could analyze this engine.

I've heard the world minecraft bandied about a bit recently, sure I've seen a banner ad. How has he made money on an un-released game, and what is minecraft? This might be hard to believe but I cannot access Google from any browser on my machine or even through an http proxy. W.T.F.

Nah lies just cba, you guys obvs know more about it than me and can explain it nice 'n' simply.

Don't want to spend a crappy Minecraft discussion, look up an article describing what the game Infiniminer is and then throw in "Role-playing game".

Cozmo
I suspected the same but I'm leaning towards his second post. I'm almost as sceptical of Notch himself as this engine.

I guess we can be shut up if someone steps up and accepts their offer, I just want to see things move.

There's definitely reason to be sceptical - just didn't like Notch outright calling them scammers with no proof. Could've caused a lot of damage.

One thing that did strike me though; there are very few unique models making up that main island, primarily (and ironically) cubic blocks of earth. I'm hoping it was just a lack of models on their side, rather than more than a few models being too much for the engine / hardware to handle. :(

Is the basic idea of this thread related to this video possibly being fake or something?

Fake?, no, not from my perspective as it's obviously real. I feel that the engine has yet to shown anything animated in the years we've watched it in development.
