[A]lpha servers

Postby MainMan » Tue May 02, 06 6:24 pm

Just seen the [A]lpha servers. Excellent ping and good variety of servers.

Discuss.

EDIT: Jeez that spam filter is fucked. It kicks you for 4 (or 5, dunno which) messages, with any time interval. I think you need to change the iMsgPerSec in DXMTL.ini (how many messages per second until it counts as a spam), and consequently the iMsgPerFive.

Pretty cool to have another ADTM server, although I haven't played on it yet.

Wow! How is that possible? I have never lagged on any of them and they are all on one machine? How do you do it. My dad's machine is 3.4ghz with 2 gigs of ram and I would not be able to host 5. What kinds conncetion you got?

Hmm... That's pretty average, but then again you wouldn't have all of [A]lpha's Servers on at one time, that's crazy talk, lol.

It shouldn't really make any difference, should it? I mean you said you'd be getting an extra 512MB's of RAM which will help, wouldn't it help and be better to get a better processor that has more than a 3.0GHz speed?

It'd run MUCH smoother.

No.

Ghz has shit all to do with end 'speed'. The Ghz race was a meaningless tatic used by Intel to make people think that Ghz == Speed.

So are you telling me my laptop with a 1.8GHz Processor doens't matter? What about those games that require like 2.6GHz or more to run?

What I'm saying is it is stupid to judge a CPU by it's speed in Ghz alone.

What you should be looking at, is a combination of five things;

1) Architecture. The type of chip drastically alters it's performence.

2) Cache. The Cache on a CPU is important, but how important relies on the architecture.

3) Clock speed. How high the CPU is clocked is a factor of it's speed, but also relies on the architecture to put it to good use.

4) Memory Bandwidth. How is the CPU talking to the memory? The slower it is, the more of a hit malloc calls will have.

5) Latency. Although this is part of the architecture, it is important in games.

I have a AMD XP-M (Mobile) Barton core, 512KB cache, which is clocked at 1.8GHz stock, but I run it at 2.2Ghz. In naming terms, that means stock is 2500+, and oc'd is 3200+. My sister has a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4, 1MB cache, Prescott core, currently running at 3.2GHz. My CPU, at a humble 2.2Ghz, is not only faster and more responsive in the desktop (Even though she has 256MB more RAM.), it also out performs in every benchmark I've run, with the exception of Photoshop and 3dsmax.

Edit: In times where a game asks for "2.6GHz minimum", you need to reffer to your CPU. If you have a 2800+ AMD, then it will suffice, as the naming convention of AMD takes andvantage of the GHz == Speed mentality of people. (Even though the 2800+ does not run at 2.6Ghz.)

If however, you have a 2Ghz Celeron, like the PoS I'm on at the moment[waiting for new mobo], forget it.

Plus it also matters what else is running in the background of your computer, programs you've got running in your tray, and other processes you don't see that are running in the background which can be seen by using task manager for example, all will be using a portion of your CPU and memory.

Take a look at this.

It is the best thing to get an idea of where your CPU stands in performance. :)

Simple answer; Open taskmanager, and set your game priority to above normal, and all your 'background' stuff to low.
Example;
Hl2.exe <- Set to above normal.
Steam.exe <- Set to low.
Winamp.exe <- set to low if you don't use it, set to high if you do.
Firewall <- Set it to normal.
Virus sacanner <- Set to low.

Then go into Control panel - > Administrative tools -> Services, and disable anything that isn't needed.

Windows is not capable of balencing programs that have equal priority settings.

No Stevie, I know what to do. I meant for those people on here that have a "few" Spyware/Malware/Adware/Virii lurking in the background of their machine munching resources and they're thinking 'Why is my pc so slow? I've got a blah gig and blah RAM'

Naturally, I already knew this.

Very informational and thanks for the tip. I'd probably know earlier but I like to stay away from things I don't quite understand...

Wasn't telling you, but rather posting it for everyones information. ;)

Side note: If anyone here doesn't know what a process listed in Task Manager does, just google the file name. (Such as "Steam.exe", "wowexec.exe", etc.)
