If you think about it, it IS your character that you're leveling in to get all that.
You can also level up professions in World Of Warcraft that acts as PROPER jobs (such as tailoring, alchemy, cooking, first aid, blacksmithing and etc).

FFXI = leather craft/smithing/gold smithing/alchemy/etc.
Your character in FFXI is never 'X level', it is the combination of things that make him/her strong, including their sub-job. This leads to huge strategic opportunities.
In FFXI, getting someone that knows their job is better then getting 3 that don't. Because of the levelling system, which means you must _always_ face tough opponents to level, if one person fscks up, your whole party can die.
