I don't remember the exact year, could've been 2000 or 2001, I was still in basic school in late form, when a classmate showed me an original CD bought from The States. It came in a cardboard CD-covering of some sort with excellent design. Later on that day I was playing the game after quick install and somewhere in the liberty Island first mission, near the first TNT crate I realized it was amazing. I believe I must've been playing it to late night hours. Soon me and my best mate spent our free time telling DX quotes, he had an amazing memory for those so he got me beat at that :P. Sounds a bit nerdy but we were quite far from that, the cyberpunk game with an ethical touch could be the day after tomorrow.
This is how I got to know the amazing game. I registered and became regular on planet deus ex forums in autumn 2002. Some time later, perhaps a year or so, I learned that there was multi-player patch for it, and I really wanted to try it out, but without net it was sort of difficult, so I didnt even download it. Instead I started working on my SP mission pack/mod. Officially started working on it January 1 2004, but that simply meant me sitting at PC all day with my nose in Steve Tack's tutorial. I hoped on a buddy of mine with new models but the project never got very far. And then, came the late June.
DXMP, already some years old game, and I was playing it, finally! I went to the biggest server that seemed to have quite a number of people in it: GODZ. The map was CMD. Huge map, and so much action going on, I had been playing stealth almost exclusively in DXSP, Combat Knife, Sniper.. the works. I dont think I were killed once before I moved right to the top of the roof, and then near the tower, there at the dark edge i sit and aimed with sniper. Was very difficult with all the people moving. Then I started shooting, and after 2 misses or so my location had been discovered and someone put a bullet to my head. To that point I had been using my Diablo2LOD nick, Delchity, but as I noticed i was getting owned I needed a random name, which later would perfectly fit my nature as well. Looking at my yahoo url i suddenly knew what I needed, rand and after that i added a totally (but not quite, one of my favorite number combinations) random number: 12, then the om end to make it clear. Next map was Smuggler, I recognized it from the SP but it had been modified. I quickly moved to the tunnel and made my way up to the upper area vent cover. I believe I got some of my first kills there, on people standing still and multi-tooling the HE20 spot. I don't remember any particular names though. When I decided to look around in DX server list after some humiliating deaths, humiliating considering my years of DXSP experience as I thought. I entered an awesome server with ~(GS)~ name and all sorts of fancy symbols. Apparently there was only one player there, and the game seemed different. It was Death-Match, and I loved the way it looked, ethereal white/yellow-ish. I moved around, trying to snipe, but the guy always headshotted me from distance, I don't think I killed him once. His name was ~(GS)Chaos~ or something similar. An amazingly skilled clan that musve been, I started to think about finding myself a clan, but I was clearly too new at dxmp. After the game finished due to limit of some sort i left the server with around 20 deaths, but there might've been one kill for me after all if i search my memory, must've been odd one.
Afterwards GODZ server introduced me to a painstaking ritual of downloading custom maps and lagging the server. Back then I only had 70k isdn at my disposal. The server was dominated by the likes of Bo[A], but 99% of the players were not too difficult, but they did best me as I still stood still trying to snipe. It took me only one/two deaths there to realize it sucked, so I picked up LAM and finally scored very well, reaching positive at some point, but not always. Then I had to move for a vacation break and that ended my DX tryout. By then I had been playing Intensively 2 weeks or so, a LOT of hours each day, few days reaching even 10-12 hour mark, but not too often as youd imagine. I saw the vacation coming so I wanted to take most of the newly discovered game. I still spent some time planning the mod while being away from the Internet during the vacation. House plans emerged, plot tightened and new ideas for augs emerged, but that all was clearly an illusion, a method to waste the time away from the people I knew. I had new goal at sight now. And that goal was DXMP.
Ill continue if there is interest. I was downloading something, so I thought id give this a go. This may also be considered my go at short story so give me pointers on what to improve or emphasize, if you want to : ).
