[Debate] RPG Games

Postby Kaiden » Tue Mar 04, 08 12:42 pm

As with the previous Spawn Killing (On the KB) and Aliasing (Will add soon) Debates, this one will be held in the same way.

Disclaimer: This topic is a debate, you are entitled to your own opinion, but flamming or spamming will result in a topic clean and warnings applied.

The main topics of discussion are -

What is their role in the community, are they helpful or a hindrance?

The Pro and Contra relative to newbies - Does it help to integrate players into the community? Etc.

Do they distract players from 'fighting' gametypes?

Preferably use this posting template -

What is their role in the community, are they helpful or a hindrance?

I feel they have their place. Of course I enjoy fighting servers, but sometimes I just want to relax and chat with people while having fun. Of course there's instant messaging programes such as MSN, but I can't run around breaking into shops while doing that!

The Pro and Contra relative to newbies - Does it help to intergrate players into the community? Etc.

I feel it is both a good source of information for newbies and a good place to intergrate into the community. For example, Cath Terra, the most popular RPG server hosted by [A]lpha is often 7-Max players. It's good to provide a place to simply relax. Also the FL Ultimate (Previous TestZone)is a good development server too, quite often people like Baleout, who would be usually fighting will be seen on it making something etc.

Do they distract players from 'fighting' gametypes?

Perhaps, but those who want to fight will be on fighting servers, and those who aren't interested will be on a RPG server etc. Quite often people play on both gametypes. It's no secret I'm probably on RPG servers more than fighting ones though - However I Enjoy the odd game on RTKM etc.

Feel free to post your thoughts.

They are both, I have little brothers that play this game and they like the RPG servers better because most of the new players and 'children' that play this game go to those servers so they aren't owned by the better and more seasoned players. On that note.. Seasoned players like more of a challenge then fighting 10 year olds so they join servers like Rhino's old server.

The Pro and Contra relative to newbies - Does it help to intergrate players into the community?

I believe it helps integrate noobs into the game because they have fun in these types of servers and then they tend to stay because of that enjoyment. After growing up or realising they want more of a challenge they integrate into the better servers and tend to become more of a fighter themselves.

Do they distract players from 'fighting' gametypes?

Not at all, RPG servers are more of a learning base for noobs who are interested in the game. They get introduced to all the weapons and fighting styles of other players. RPG maps also lead to interest in 'How do i create a cool map like that!' and 'I need some references on how to code so i can create a weapon like that!'

All in all, I think it will help noobs make friends with people who play this game and make them stay and help everything grow.

Hm.. So how do you explain people such as myself, Alex, Dae, Baleout, Sniper, Vondunloas etc on them? We're all noobs too? :D

RPG would be better if all the quality was good.

But it usually is just a laggy fest with 4 kids who have the adminpassword thinking they are god

As hoster of an 'RPG' server, I am quite interested in all reactions. Tell me, how does your description match to Cathedral Terra, and tell me how we can improve :)

I suppose that would describe certain servers, but Cath Terra isn't moderated much except remotely (I'm quite often on Telnet). If there is a problem one of the players will tell me on MSN or PM, and I'll fix it.

It doesn't.
Hence why I said usually.

You can improve by adding another map to the rotation though.

What is their role in the community, are they helpful or a hindrance?

They are practically unnoticable for the particular dxmp community(ies) im part of, being active in competitive s0a, atdm, btdm, ag. And since they are unnoticable they probably do not hinder the community, and in fact are helpful cleaning competitive servers of people that are very.. immature.

The Pro and Contra relative to newbies - Does it help to intergrate players into the community?

They will not integrate. Not without large community forums such as this (which basically erases any importance the RPG mode might have, since counter striker can be integrated as easily). Acceptance to the competitive community will take place at similar rate regardless of RPG experience.

Do they distract players from 'fighting' gametypes?

Partly Yes, but if the person chooses RPG it would be questionable if and for how long he would frequent other servers in the first place.

Deus Ex Multiplayer, to me, is brilliant because it's gameplay varies dramatically. If you get bored of playing 0augs, you can go play a quick blast of augs. Tired of that/don't like it? Go play DXAG and DXSG. Bored of fighting altogether, go to RPG/testzone and mess around, talk to someone etc. Server is full of kids? Come to the forums and talk about stuff, make a map or a mod etc. Bored of that? Hey, you haven't played 0aug for a while!
I don't see how an extra mode of gameplay can be a hindrance to any game. Don't like it? Don't play it.

The Pro and Contra relative to newbies - Does it help to intergrate players into the community? Etc.
^It's spelt integrate
If by community you mean the mappers and modders who work to make DX better etc, then yes (as well as playing in servers with mods).
However if you mean the system of clans and fighting, you'd be better off in a fighting server.
And then again, there's the people who discuss and talk about Deus Ex, where you would need to visit a forum.
If you really want to become part of the community, you need to do as much as possible within DX. It's unlikely that a newbie would come to an RPG server and then ONLY go to that server. Even if an RPG server is full of kids and puts a bad impression on them, there have been plenty of bad fighting servers too that would have the same effect.

Do they distract players from 'fighting' gametypes?
OK, it might be great if people only went on fighting servers, but then you lose the other aspect of gameplay and the uniqueness that Deus Ex posesses.

Remember that Deus Ex isn't an FPS, but an FPS-RPG.

I like that pattern.

Deus Ex is an old game. If someone wants combat, they can go to some of the more recent greats out there. But if someone wants a Multiplayer Sci-Fi FPSRPG, they go where? Deus Ex only.

Then they find multiplayer sci-fi fpsrpg mod for some other game.

DXMP is a shooter with some choices (skills, augs). the popular 0augs feature neither, yet it dominates over the atdm that does have the "rpg elements".
What you are talking about is a mod that only certain people frequent. Making deus ex feature only that gametype will efficiently lead to the final hour of this release.
What an astounding claim lmao.

Not to mention the solution the mod offers is rather eccentric, not to say shit, if it were to be a single game.

Then again, Cath Terra is probably the most next popular server to RTKM.

My opinion is to play RPGs if you like them, and play Fighting when you want to do that.

What is their role in the community, are they helpful or a hindrance?

They keep people entertained and provide a different gametype for people
who dont like fighting. It is entertaining to break into shops and Collecting all the cash.

The Pro and Contra relative to newbies - Does it help to intergrate players into the community? Etc.

pro:I think that it is good for newbies to get into modding. It also provides entertainment for people who dont like fighting so it keeps more members in the community.

con:They may not like all the god killing and think this game sucks and leave and dont come back.

Do they distract players from 'fighting' gametypes?

Nope not really. i like fighting but i aslo do fun/RPG (cathedral terra is the best for that).
People who like fighting stay fighting. and vice versa.
