XP vs Vista

Postby ~SaSQuAtCH~ » Mon May 12, 08 11:47 am

Vista's been out for months now, and I wonder how many of you do actually use Vista. Please vote and tell why.

I'm using XP because it's pretty easy to use and because it doesn't require as much memory and CPU as Vista. Also, as I heard Vista still has a lot of bugs so I'm gonna wait at least a year to install it.

I use Vista out of force. I don't like Vista and would prefer XP. All my programs work on Vista fine but Vista is a memory hog (and I'm using the CLASSIC Theme, which I do on all Windows OS' lol) and it sucks in general.

I'd use XP personally, I'm only using Vista because when my old shitty Dell Inspiron 2200 fucked up (accidentally spilt half a can of coke on it when moving it and yes, it was a legit accident lol) my parents insurance company replaced it with a laptop 3x as good as the Dell but it had Vista.

If DX10 wasn't just a different way to do the same damn things then perhaps I'd bother with Vista.

But as proven with Crysis, DX10 isn't worth the jump to Vista.

If you dont have a powerful computer stick with XP.

Vista has a lot of bugs and problems to iron out still. Vista IS a memory hog.

Unless your computer is good stay with XP. Simple. Don't blame Vista for your crap computer, people. Only problem I've ever had was it got screwed over when I used some Firewall it didn't like, 10 minute restore fixed it though.

Vista has plenty of good things:

*Low CPU taking disk-defrag every Wednesday, this isn't auto unless you set it on XP, and most computer newbies wouldn't know about it. It's auto on on Vista, and keeps your computer defragmented.
*Looks a lot better, the transparent effects are cool. Plus the colours.
*Side bar, very useful.
*Backgrounds are cool too. 3D screensavers etc.
*Instant search results, can take 3+ mins to search on WinXP.
*DX10, didn't really bother me though.

Although you can rip these off to XP, looks kind of stupid unless you got the Toolbar+Sidebar, which I dunno if you can get.

Other points;

*Support will eventually stop for XP, you'll be forced to switch to Vista eventually.
*Quite a few games in the future will be Vista only.

So yeah, Vista is good if you're computer is good. If it isn't don't blame Vista. XP can run well enough on 100MB Ram, but recommended 512MB. For Vista I would recommened 1-2GB Ram, and a dual core.

Vista CAN be slow or annoying to those without decent specs. I know. My laptop has it. Every now and again it'll just freeze, lag, firefox won't open, and other things. So I know, before you start arguing lol.

I use Vista, came with the laptop it's a memory hog, but my laptop has 4 gigs of ram so lol.

Sure I prefer XP, but most people who complain about Vista are those who have never actually used it..

It likes to fuck up with loads of firewalls, I don't think anyone has been able to make a firewall be completely Vista friendly yet. Not all the free ones that I know of, anyways.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Low CPU taking disk-defrag every Wednesday, this isn't auto unless you set it on XP, and most computer newbies wouldn't know about it. It's auto on on Vista, and keeps your computer defragmented.

Windows default defrag may be free but it's by no means special or any good. I personally use Diskeeper and it's much better. It's not needed but it's faster, it can be scheduled to run at regular intervals (if one isn't set it'll defrag on a regular basis depending on how often files are moved, deleted and edited) and it also tells you, in percentages, the amount of time you'll gain in terms of loading speeds.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Looks a lot better, the transparent effects are cool. Plus the colours.

This is why it's a memory hog. It doesn't need all this shit. Sure it may look all nice and pretty but if the computer won't run smoothly then it ain't needed. This is why the majority of decent things look like shit, it's also why I have used every Windows OS in the original Classic Theme as it runs so much damn faster. It may not look pretty but don't complain to us if your PC runs slow because of it's GUI.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Side bar, very useful.

You mean the Gadgets and yeah, they are useful but again, not needed and are an EXTREME memory hog. If you're on a DSL connection, and I'm fairly certain over half the population of this forum are, then you don't need any of that crap anyway. It also drains memory which you'll need extensively if playing games.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Backgrounds are cool too. 3D screensavers etc.

Memory hog. Goddamn Vista has a fucken bunch of 'em eh? Still, this isn't as bad as the above things you mentioned.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Instant search results, can take 3+ mins to search on WinXP.

This I have to agree on. Though because I am a memory hog myself and want whatever memory I can spare, I never have indexing active. Never really need it either. What I do love with Vista is it's Start Menu Search/Run feature, where you type something in (eg., Paint or Notepad), press Enter and it runs.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*DX10, didn't really bother me though.

I have it but only because it updated itself. I'm never going to use it on this piece of crap and I'm never going to buy Crysis so I'm not worried about the problems of DX10.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:Although you can rip these off to XP, looks kind of stupid unless you got the Toolbar+Sidebar, which I dunno if you can get.

Sidebar isn't needed but yeah, you can get a complete Vista-looking Windows XP. My mate, a complete graphics hog, has it. I couldn't stand it personally.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Support will eventually stop for XP, you'll be forced to switch to Vista eventually.

This is true, but you're more than likely going to find much better support for free online anyway. I know I have.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Quite a few games in the future will be Vista only.

Like the above note, it won't be a for a good while yet. It would not be a game developers wisest move to stop the developing of Windows XP games. Yes, they'll start making games for Vista but it'd be so retarded for them to stop making them for XP as well. Especially when XP's support has run out completely yet.

~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:So yeah, Vista is good if you're computer is good. If it isn't don't blame Vista. XP can run well enough on 100MB Ram, but recommended 512MB. For Vista I would recommened 1-2GB Ram, and a dual core.

Vista will run fine on a 1GB of RAM but the pros say to run it on 2GB and I'd have to agree. A Dual-core processor is never needed as I run an Intel Dual-core 1.46GHz processor and again, runs fine for me. That and having a dual-core processor ain't going to change much as not everything is dual-core compatible just yet.

It'd also be good to note that anyone using Windows Vista Home-Basic 32-bit, do NOT go out and upgrade your PC to 4GB of RAM. It won't do just shit, as you'll only get the effect of AROUND 3GB of that before it basically throws the rest away.

Home Basic 64-bit can use up to 4GB, Home-Premium can run up to 6-8GB if I'm not mistaken (6GB for 32-bit, 8GB for 64). And IIRC, Vista Ultimate 64-bit's maximum RAM "intake" would be approximately 32GB, that's if I recall correctly of course. Though having 32GB for a personal computer and even a gaming one is excessive as NO game needs it. Yet, anyways lol.

As do I but Vista does have a lot of bugs and you'd be a fool not to admit that. Vista SP1 has just been released and apparently it fixes some bugs. But most people just notice that it increases boot times and decreases shut down times, which is good enough for me lol.

To anyone using Windows Vista, check out www.pcstats.com for guides on improving performance. I'll get the full link later, the site is having some downtime atm so that sucks...

One thing to note about vista is its reluctancy to work correctly with 3rd party audio devices, i.e. sound cards. This isn't only down to the fact that the sound output has been reviewed, its also the actual audio control panel - Vista has real difficulties recognising more than its fair share of different audio cards.

And don't get me started on SLI compatibility.

Or maybe he just has a high spec PC?

2 gigs of ram just being alive would take up about 40-45% of ram usage

4 gigs gives me just 15%

I had both months before Vista was even released, still have them. Together they use about 30megabytes of ram, sometimes less.

My advice to all of you, being constructive in this thread.....

If you own a C2D, C2Q, A64 or Opteron, don't use a 32-bit OS. You get half the depth and half the registers. Windows Vista is something I stay away from because I can't stand DRM. Microsoft DRM servers are shutting down in August. It means that if you paid for music, you have to get it validated before they shut down. If your OS crashes or you change your OS, THOSE files will be unplayable anywhere you go, thanks to the authentication servers being down pernamently.

Vista has a lot of things which have been broken due to affirmative action and battles taking place. DRM is still in place.

My Solution:

Windows XP 64-bit

Reasoning:

Windows XP 64-bit was made from the Kernel used for Windows Server 2003. The kernel was actually updated and released in 2005. The only good OS that had HIGH acclaim and reviews after release was Windows Server 2003...The others just got fair reviews.

Reason Why I don't use Windows XP 32-bit.

1) The Kernel itself is from a Conceptual Design in 1998 that used the windows nt code and was a rehash. Its values were optimized for Windows 2000 and to make up for performance hits on XP, all default values were used....Its 2008 and I don't want a 10 year old Kernel that shows its weaknesses everytime I load the OS up.

2) The same five major vulnerabilities that Security companies have worked on have not been solved in Windows XP-32 bit, but have been solved in Windows XP-64 bit and Vista.

Reason I use Windows XP 64-bit

1) I own a native 64-bit processor and it would a waste to put it through a 32-bit OS.

2) I run on 8GB of RAM using 3GB as a Ramdisk for gaming and servers.

3) While Windows Vista gives you a 20 - 30% performance hit vs Windows XP 32 bit, Windows XP-64 bit gives you a 20 - 30% performance improvement over Windows XP 32-bit and has greater tolerance levels and much better security. Crytek claimed on Vista 64 bit that one gets 22% more performance on Crysis than on Windows Vista 32-bit, but on Windows XP-64 bit, Crysis Performance was actually 15 - 20% higher than on Windows Vista 64-bit.

4) The kernel and design of the OS itself was derived from a Server Operating System in which it was tweaked and optimized even further, while the Design for Vista came from Windows XP-32 bit, with a lot more added bloatware + DRM. Vista = Windows XP + Alcatraz

Of course Windows XP is not my main OS.....:) I use it when it comes to gaming....

My main OS?

Ubuntu Linux 64-bit.....

With all the customization and work I've done on it....Out of the box you have everything that you need. I only use Windows XP 64-bit to play games where I dont get a good framerate under Linux + Wine......As well as use Windows XP 64-bit for my Online Gaming Tournaments with serious equipment.

Reason Why I use Linux as a main OS

1) I cant stand companies who make a piece of software and charge you $100 - 200 for it, then make a NEW VERSION by putting in a feature which you NEED and can only get through the upgrade and are forced into upgrading to a VERSION with a new GUI which costs 50% more RAM and double the processing power for 1 - 2% more and be charged 50 - 100 for the upgrade.

2)Out of the box, Ubuntu has ONE program in each category that works well. Its far more efficient than a Microsoft OS and far more secure. You don't get a complete package with Windows and have to work a lot on Windows to configure it decently.

3) Its free and have 3 - 5 year support and the forums are very friendly. Even I need help at times and its really nice speaking with other programers and knowing that I dont have to be part of the vicious cycle were Microsoft and APPLE talk about "SECURITY" in an OS and intentionally bloat up their Operating Systems to force people into buying more hardware....and for what? Because Security to APPLE and MICROSOFT is all about PROTECTING THEIR PROFITS, while security to Linux is all about protecting YOU and the OS itself.

Of course I love FreeBSD, that is the OS for true Unix fans as well as Fedora Core, ReactorOS and Minuet, an OS completely written in Assembly Language.

Windows XP 64-bit runs slower in quite a few of my games than 32-bit.

And that is why I don't use that either.

Too many compatibility issues also.

Yeah but it can't be as bad as Vista, can it? Vista pretty much reaches the peak of shittyness. What I hate is it's slogan:

"The wow starts now." - SHOULDN'T THE WOW HAVE STARTED IN 1975-1985 WHEN IT WAS FUCKING FOUNDED?! That seriously confuses the hell outta me.

A choice between XP 64 and Vista? I'd choose Vista - took me 3 hours just to look for a compatible wireless driver on 64 bit. Consider the benefits of Vista as opposed to the taxing of graphics capabilities.

"Hi, im windows xp 64-bit...I came from a Server OS and was programmed and known for my network code in 2005, but I don't have wireless support even though its fundamental in the server world and many people in the industry considered me to be good..and there is a service called WIRELESS CONFIGURATION in my service list out of the box!"

(Start/Run/Services.msc) ^_^

If you want an OS with DRM rootkits and Security Rootkits at the OS level installed...who's only real benefit is DirectX10.1 (which is not really a benefit anymore)...Hey go right ahead and install Vista. Have fun with WGA :)

Destroyer, not meaning to undermine your extensive knowledge of the all great Windows XP 64 Bit OS, my wireless USB stick still needs a fucking driver to work, much like any other hardware peripheral.

USB 2.0 itself, was actually developed by Intel and Microsoft. The main USB driver is in Windows XP. If its a driver itself that is proprietary, you should go to the manufacturer site....In fact...

Find me on MSN, Setsunayaki@yahoo.com

Im Setsunayaki on AIM.

I don't mind helping you set up your system...because it can be tricky and frustrating looking for drivers for any platform.

//======================================

Enkidudu....I was making a joke, but the last sentence is important.

DRM is short for Digital Rights Management. In music, so many pirates downloaded music that microsoft used Vista to help the RIAA by getting people who buy music with DRM to only be able to PLAY that music on the PC it was paid for and downloaded on. The buyers have to authenticate the music they buy.

Eventually people got ANGRY that such a system existed because CD BUYERS were being accused of piracy. The result was Microsoft is closing their servers to authenticate the music that you bought from the DRM services which means, if your computer crashes under Vista....and you restore it, since the authentication servers are down, you will never be able to listen to those tracks you paid money for again. They won't even playback!

This is why so many sites Encourage people to Pirate music, because when you pay for it, you are TREATED like a pirate and deal with so much shit. I became a pirate when many years ago, I called microsoft to restore my Windows XP Home edition in 2001 and the one on the phone accused me of being a pirate even though I sent him a picture of the CD itself along with the actual manual that came with it.......

I joined the different pirate guilds and found out that they were the leaders of open source programming along with different moves to actually improve music and programming by actually attacking commercial software developers who intentionally bloatware their software with features to extort money from you at the cost of a lot more resources, time and energy. These are the same assholes who add 1 - 2 new features, Change the GUI....and about 1% of the program and have the audacity to charge you 50 - 200 for an upgrade.

Its because of us pirates in conjunction with 14 support groups that the United States Department of Justice cracked down and arrested members of the DRAM and technology Cartel and imposed many combined fines upon the industry hitting trillions...and its why prices for technology are a lot lower....

Think Star Wars....

Technology Corporations, Microsoft, Apple and the DRAM Executives = The Galactic Empire
Open Source Linux Developers, Pirates and Open Source programmers = The Rebellion

We just scored two major victories in the past week. We are fighting MPAA and RIAA directly and "Anonymous" has been helping us.

Finally, in regards to Microsoft and Apple

If you truly want them to make a better Operating System...hit them where it HURTS THE MOST.....Use Linux Ubuntu or Fedora Core...a good free open source build. Put your foot down and when microsoft and apple see that many are ditching their OSes....they will be FORCED to change their tune and stop milking the public for every cent they are worth and will have to create a decent product without any dirty tricks.

I only use Windows when I play games, Out of the box Ubuntu does every single basic and intermediate thing any general user could do, and better than windows or mac os x...and all the software is free.
