Monitors - Which Fuckin' One?

Postby Shinobi » Fri Aug 22, 08 11:57 pm

Trying to choose a new monitor. Tested two recently, and liked them:

Samsung SM245B
LG L227WT

....but - the Samsung is just too damn expensive, and the LG uses a TN panel, which theoretically should be shit, according to like every review of monitors I've read. Looked okay to me, but I've been using an Acer 19" pile of crap for the past year, and a 10 year old Taxan CRT before that!

Sooooooo....... any recommend a good monitor? Gotta meet the following:

5ms or quicker response time
No smaller than 20"
It's gotta LOOK GOOD (image-wise)

I really don't give a damn if the monitor itself is smexy looking or shite looking, but it's gotta do the job *cough-crysis-cough*
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Personally I'd just go after an old CRT monitor. :)

CRT for quality but I don't have room on my desk.

Hanns.G have a really good cheap 19' widescreen monitor, it is all you need really right now.

2 x 17in CRT's are great desktop real estate. And are REALLY CHEAP now.

But if I had the cash I would ditch the CRT's for 2x widescreens.

IMO NO laptop is suited for gaming. Sorry, but the idea of being hunched over some little shitty plastic thing with a crap screen and fucked up keyboard just doesn't make sense.... :!:

Settled for the Samsung SM226BW - 22" was just that little bit more affordable. That Hanns.G is okay, but I'm really looking for quality. CRT would be my choice, but I too don't have the space for it.

I prefer Dell and Apple for the color quality.

<s>Damn you troll</s> A decent laptop will never replace a decent PC, as Jay said.

Unless you need a computer only for browsing the internet, photos and writing essays for uni.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over how awesome laptops are.

What else do you need computers for?

To actually upgrade it without buying an entirely new system. Also less chances to overheat.

programming, web-design, playing games, drawing on a wacom tablet, 3d rendering, listening to music, watching tv

for all these activities I need at least a 22" display, a good processor with a lot of RAM (therefore it needs good ventilation which isn't possible in a laptop) and a good videocard; as for music I prefer to listen it from a good audiocard, and for receiving TV signal I need a TV-tuner

you can set all of those up using a laptop, but
a) why overpay for the smaller size?
b) there is no ability to upgrade
c) the more powerful your laptop you've got (and the bigger is your laptop display), the less battery life it has, and that kinda eliminates the point of it

3d rendering was possible even on third Pentiums, it really depends on time and a quality of render :P

but you're right of course

In my coursework,
Rendering time > Time it takes for battery to lose all energy.

This equals lost work, frustration, and failing the finals.
Trust me, I've been there so many times, I bought an Alienware laptop strictly for college and it hasn't been useful for ANYTHING besides a portable notebook, which I can just get an analog pad instead.

When it comes to rendering large complex models such as buildings, and the anti-fucking-aliasing has to be set so high, laptops do not put out, ever.
