External Hard Drives

So yeah, I only have 750 MB of space left on this computer.

Option A was to clear each and every one of the useless shit I didn't need. I did disk cleanup and it was a failure, only 5 mb was cleared.

Option B, I thought, is to buy an External Hard Drive.

Now I'm looking for something with a lot of space, 500 GB minimum. But the tricky part is, this computer is a piece of shit and thus is not compatible with the modern USB 2.0. Only IEEE 1394.

I had thought of buying the Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme below:





But at Newegg it's a costly $198.

I need a cheaper one. Thoughts?

Holy shit your PC must really suck if it's not compatible with USB 2.0. Fuck that, upgrade your damn computer LOL.

Anyhoo, I'm not good with hardware. As far as I'm concerned, if it works and does what it's supposed to, then I'll probably buy it. If it's a decent size and it's a cheap amount then why not? Thing is, Newegg is online so I doubt they accept returns, for a "just in case" moment.

I'd also recommend cleaning up your current HDD for free space as well. Backup old shit you think you won't need and that isn't aligned to the registry at all (images, documents, videos, music, all of this you'll want to keep of course but sometimes I've deleted stuff I wanted to keep so now I keep all my software setups lol). Then you've got "less important" stuff and files most people won't think of backing up, like game saves, patches, etc.

After that, you'll want to uninstall any shit you don't need (I usually have a lot). Including anything under 1GB because while I have a ton of ~200mb programs, they take up space (I've only like 34.4GB of my shitty 100GB HDD left lol).

You'll also want to do a disk defragmentation, if not already (if you have, do one anyway). I suggest getting Diskeeper personally and if you PM me and I can find you a download link for the premier version of it. Diskeeper runs a lot faster then the default defraggers, has more options and also tells you some helpful data about your computer before and after defragmentation (in percentages, it tells you what you can expect).

This is possibly unrelated to your case, but if this helps - I've been using three 1TB-2TB WD MyBooks actively for 2-3 years already, and they work great without any problems, and they have interfaces besides USB.
