Classic Resident Evil

Postby James » Thu Dec 11, 08 5:59 pm

Resident Evil 5 sprints towards us faster and faster, this topic is about any of the classic games we've grown up with for over 12 years (Resident Evil 2 came out just a little over 10 years ago!)

This topic includes:
1
2 (and beta)
Survivor
3
Code Veronica
Survivor 2
Rebirth
0
Dead Aim: Survivor 4
Outbreak (both)

First I'd like to set the topic to your opinions of the best classic style Resident Evil in game-play?, I'd have to say Outbreak. Basically for having the most fleshed out mechanics and brings survival horror to the maximum.
I am dead.

Resident Evil 1 set the trend, it was remarkable.
Resident Evil 2 was great, went to strange places fighting weird monsters, and the replayability of it was a good trait.
Resident Evil 3 was good
Resident Evil 4 was different but a revolutionary change in the RE style of games from that point on
Have yet to play Umbrella Chronicles
Code Veronica was alright
Resident Evil 0 was ok, could use some more elements of horror, truth be told
Dead Aim was alright
Didn't play Survivor, heard it was shit
Outbreak 1/2 was efficient in terms of survival horror, especially on Very Hard mode. 85% of the time you'd find yourself defending for your life with sticks and pipes, and guns are rare and not just lying around every office table like in most RE games. It's also impressive in terms of realistic scenarios, and expanding on the location of "Raccoon City" and various information about it. We also got to see that each character has a background story and different personalities, sometimes clashing with each other, which is great because I was afraid they'd be empty shells of people who only have a specific trait.

If you were to ask me my favorite RE-style game, it would definitely be Resident Evil 2. If you were to ask me the most realistic zombie survival, its a clash between Outbreak 1 and 2.

I was actually amazed when I played Resident Evil Survivor, it's pretty awesome. FPS ftw.

Also I prefer Resident Evil 2 over all others, I crapped my pants when I walked past that bit with the windows and like the arms coming through them... You know... Planks...

but Resident Evil 4 has way moar replayability than Resident Evil 2, it's fun to restart your game with all your weapons maxed out and a shitload of ammo, though the fun doesn't last too long, it's still fun.

Outbreak was pretty cool, nail gun ftw! Never really got into it though, I borrowed it from a mate and he stole it back after a few days.

I did play Resident Evil 1, but I don't remember too much of it, other than annoying birds that were impossible to kill ¬_¬

Resident Evil 3 made me have a heart attack aswell, fucker jumped through the window with a fucking Gep Gun.
Yeah. Noob.

Resident Evil 1 (original) set the trend, although it has been optimised amazingly in RE:DS, the multiplayer is fun, and the addition of the knife scenes are pretty cool

REmake for me is what I would class as what defines resident evil. It's graphically amazing of course, but it continues a tense mood, and the addition of the uber creepy Crimson Heads was just utterly brilliant

While REmake is the definition of classic resident evil, Resident Evil 2 is easily the best classic resident evil game, if not best resident evil game of all the styles. Resident Evil 2 optimised some shoddy features from 1, and easily gave fans a very nice series of weapons to play with, especially Leon's upgradeable guns, turning the stubby shotgun to a powerful limb rendering beast.

Resident Evil 3, although not deviating from the standards of RE2, brought one very important creation to the series. Probably the greatest monster in all the RE games, Nemesis. He had the "oh fuck" which you experienced from RE1, the "gimme a break!" which you probably said while fighting birkin as he mutates on 2, and the "shit run run run" from seeing Mr X arise again. Except, unlike Mr X, Nemesis freaking followed you!

Resident Evil 4, (and soon RE5), are best considered when NOT compared to the other resident evils. With all the fanboy complaints out of the window, Resident Evil 4 is an AMAZING game. In testament to how good I think this game is, I BOUGHT 2 versions, Gamecube when it first came out, and the definitive version, the Wii Version.

It combines a fast pace, a constant feel of tension, and visuals which will blow your mind away. What keeps you more on edge is that over 50% of the game you have to protect the weakling Ashley (although I would still do her).

BUT, it isn't a classic resident evil game. It doesn't have the atmospheric and slowly creeping fear which the classic games gave, and of course its now ACTIONZ orientated, which sucks because I liked the crap controls and annoying camera angles of the originals.

RE: Code Veronica, IMO, is underrated as a game. It brought very nice visuals compared to 3, beautiful CGI, and a mastered classic control system. The weapons in it were perfect, the npc bad guys were amazing, (ALFRED! WESKER! Alexia...), the whole game was just a brilliant continuation of the series, and I don't understand why it gets such little attention/negative comments...

Oh wait, maybe it was Steve

Resident Evil 0 was a good game, but there was something a bit lackluster in it, it was good, but for some reason which I have trouble pinpointing, it wasn't great! I disagree a little with Cata, the scary aspect for me was the leech men and the frogs. Frikin one hit kill.

I haven't played the survivors, which is a shitter, I did want to play 1 and Dead Aim.

Umbrella chronicles is just...

What annoyed me was the complete retconning of the story. Seriously if Capcom turned around and said, "forget the main games, if you want story Umbrella Chronicles is canon" I would throw a serious hissy fit.

The game itself is ok, I liked it for what it was, but I couldn't really play it by myself, I find it better with 2 people.

And that leaves me with the Outbreaks. Some of my favourite resident evil moments come from this game, and some of my worst, of course, thats because of good/bad players.

Outbreak 1 was good, but if it was online (in PAL, bloody capcom fucktards), it would have been better.

Outbreak 2 was just amazing, online play was brilliant, and I have had some seriously fun times on it. Except that they shut the servers down... BASTARDS

Well seeing as everyone is confident to go into free discussion I'll mention my full opinions slowly:

Resident Evil 2 will always be my favorite game, fucking hell I get so many goosebumps from this games and from the recent release of Resident Evil: Degeneration I was on such a nostalgia trip from it because it felt like a direct sequel to Leon and Claire's adventure. Although in my opinion (RE2) Leon and Claire are the weakest player characters so far, the characters in this game are brilliant especially the Birkin family (Birkin while a monster when you encounter him still shows signs of humanity later on in the game past his feral rage, then shortly reverts back to it). Upon replaying the game in my adolescence I understood how deep the characters were this time around, especially when I realized how sick Sherry being the host to Birkin's larvae was.

The enemies of RE2 are some of my most favorite, city zombies that truly defined the RESIDENT in the title, the lickers and their agile and odd crawl movements, the EASY to kill dogs, that giant alligator, the plant 43s ("Ivy") and who cannot forget the stars of the show, William Birkin and Mr. X who in my opinion are both better than the entire tyrant cast including Nemesis (fun fact, combine the two together and you pretty much get Nemesis don't you?, an unstable stalker. Funny thing is William Birkin in the beta of the game kept saying "Sherry..." does this sound familiar?). William Birkin sure is something because of how brutal the G-virus is, an unstable acceleration to the cells which forces mutation and regression... and to even try killing it will just make it bigger and stronger! G's status stops it from being a successful controlled B.O.W but wipes the zombies off the map with it's offspring ability to transmit its form of 'infection', Jesus Christ imagine all those G-Embryo's running around who can most likely impregnate YOU with another generation of these odd offspring. Mr. X is short and sweet, a giant stalking bastard who was so quiet, crashing through walls and ceilings just to throw you out with a big bang as a successor to the T-002 in the first game, Nemesis didn't have that same effect for me except for actually following me from room to room.

My favorite encounter in the game has to be the final battle of scenario 1, a completely chaotic symphony with a shrieking choir living up the sheer power of William Birkin's form right now, a slow walking bi-pedal monstrosity with 4 arms, woah I knocked him down then suddenly he regressed, got bigger and is now running on all... SIXES, extended his chest into teeth and is jumping on top of the incubated experiments tricking you like the poor sap you are! When you kill him, why is he turning into goo?... wait til you complete the next part of the game and find out.

Theres one thing I cannot forgive RE2 for, lack of hunters, but that'll be continued in my next post.

I'd have to say, Outbreak 1 Online was better than Outbreak 2 Online.

Outbreak 1 I had so many fun times in, especially doing Decisions Decisions on Very Hard with some of my m8s.

OH SHIT HELP!

Outbreak 2 is alright, me and my friends keep attempting Showdown 3 on VH, I remember I defeated it like twice.... with only my one m8 alive, and we had to kill Nyx with goddamn half-bent pipes due to the shortage of rockats... good thing I picked David and his butter knife... anyways, hardest level in my opinion. But not nearly as many fun times as Outbreak 1.

A random factoid about RE2 (Or at least, the demo):

If you freeze the timer on a RE2 demo, you can actually complete about half the game (if memory serves) without it ending. It crashes as you've just used the Heart key, and gone past the shutters through that room, then down the stairs. The demo's only supposed to last ten minutes.

Infinite time, no saves, and a police station where the only weapon I allowed myself was an infinite ammo flamethrower. (Any weapon Leon can use is in the demo. As well as Rebecca's, you just can't use her weapons...)

UK demo time freeze code: 800D67B6 176F
UK demo Infinite Flamethrower code: 800D71C0 FF10

Mind you, these were based off of OPM's issue 14 demo-disc, so they may be wrong else-where.

Also, I still think the original RE is the best, if only for the shite dialogs. 'You were almost a Jill Sandwich!'... 'It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you...' ... classic.

Also: MB - Did you notice some things in RE:DS -

1 - The colours seemed rather off to me, too saturated, it seems.
2 - Initial Video typo - 'Bizarr' in the paper as opposed to 'Bizarre'

... or are these limited to my sister's copy of the game? :o

I completed Resident Evil 3 for the first time on Monday, was a decent enough game, enjoyed the surprise element of Nemesis following you around everywhere, i forgot about him bursting through the wall in the RPD, shat bricks there.

Only one i've yet to finish story wise is Code Veronica, whats your opinions on that game?

I'm guessing they thought having Sheva would make up for the lack of space, it dosn't, her AI is shit, it makes it worse

Well I really like it.(I only play over xbl though so idk about the shit A.I.) I haven't really played the older games but res evil 5 is pretty much an action game. I'm already on like my 3rd play through and haven't got bored yet. I wouldn't even class it as scary with unlimited ammo. xD

It's got a mountain of Achievments (Xbox), and Trophies(PS3), a load of figurines and costumes and things to buy in the shop, plus there's a Co Op Mercanaries mode, the replayability is pretty good.

Dunno if you guys noticed this, but the booming voice in every RE game who says "Resident Evil" when you start a new game, seems to have gotten much more pansier with Resident Evil 5.
