It's always adviseable to open up your case first and familiarise yourself with it. There you can make the judgement.

Are you sure the Optiplex 755 has PCI-Express.

Also, I agree with Protocol. Don't go for that bargain, hollow nonscence. Get a man's card!

The bare minimum if you're upgrading to a 9 series card from 7-series and under is the 9600GT.

I wouldn't even get the 9 series because it'll be outdated soon and no big significant improvement over the cheaper 8 series, that's why I got a 8600GT 512mb for 20 quid.

Your crappy office PC's motherboard doesn't even support PCI-E  The processor is some crappy singlecore 1.8 GHz processor with very cheap RAM and only a 220W PSU. Even if the computer would allow you to put PCI-E graphics cards, considering the Nvidia 9x series videocards is stupid, because the other parts of the system would only end up bottlenecking it.

My suggestion; get your rich ass oil millionaire daddy to buy you a new PC.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. WAIT 10 YEARS. BUY GOOD CARD. THEN REALISE YOU WASTED MONEY CAUSE IN 6 MONTHS IT'LL BE UPGRADED AGAIN.

Alas is the life-span of a video card... not very long (doubt it's six months but it still gets my point across). Seriously, by the time I'd decided to get the 9800 GT I found about the blood GeForce 260 and 280... too costly for me anyways so it doesn't matter lol.

DX10 and DX11 piss me off since I like Windows XP lol. But in saying this, I also like Windows 7 so it could all balance out in the long-run anyways.

That's why you look at the market first. Always have a look to the future. You can then save up and get bang up to date.

Also, isn't the 9800GT just a rebrand of the 8800GT?

So in the case I should just buy an 8800 GT? Is there anything better than it that's relatively cheap?

I would say get a 9500gt, its a very good budget card, less then £50. That is what i have and it can run CoD4 on high settings except 'shadows' at around 55-60 fps, if they are on it drops to around 40. That is pretty impressive if you ask me. If your not a hardcore pc gamer don't waste your money on some expensive graphic card, its not worth it.

A 9500GT is not a good card
COD4 is not a taxing game
If you can't afford to upgrade your PC every 2/3 years at least then it's not worth owning one anyway.

Its not about being able to afford a new PC every 3 years, its your choice if you want to upgrade or not, depends on what you use your pc for mostly. If you don't play that many games on the pc whats the point of wasting so much money on such a high end card just so you can play ONE specific game which requires a lot of power compared to hundreds of other games. Just buy a console, you save a buck load and you won't need to worry about upgrading your graphics card/pc every 5 months, and no need worry about system requirements either.

the difference between a £50 and £80 card is alot.

The 9500GT is already behind the game. Spend £10 more you get a 9600GT that isn't. Spend £10 more than that you get a 8800GT that is perfectly acceptable. Spend £10 more you get a card future proofed for a year. Then the cost/time gradient gets steeper.

At the end of the day, the 9500GT is going to need replacing -now- if you want to play anything serious with good quality. I don't spend £50 on something that needs replacing.

My monitor's resolution is 1024 / 768, thats what i use for most games as well.

The 9500gt was released in 2008 so its not really that old. It is not a card designed for extreme gaming, it is more for media and stuff, so considering that, it is not so bad for its price, obviously if you want to play games like 'crysis', you would need a lot more powerful card like a 8800gt or 9800gtx.

I'm just saying if your going to play games released around early 2008, then this card will do more then a good job for its price, you just wont be able to play at the maximum settings as smooth as the other high end cards. The point is you only need a high end gfx card if you want to play at a really high resolution or on like a large monitor.

the difference between a £50 and £80 card is alot.

Duh, there is a reason why there is a £30 difference, £80 is a lot of money compared to £50, i only payed £35 for my one any way.
