Penumbra series

Penumbra: Overture is a cool game I found out about a week ago. The game tells the story of Philip, who receives a letter from his dead father and heads off to investigate Greenland for clues. Apparently the plot/creatures are influenced heavily by Lovecraft's works, which is always a plus. The gameplay is different in that it is somewhat of a "puzzle-solving horror" played entirely in 1st person, while also utilizing stealth.

There are no firearms in the game, so during combat the player is limited to improvised melee fighting with a pickaxe, or throwing objects at attacking creatures. The game is designed to emphasize stealth and avoidance over direct conflict...

...The game's main focus is on exploration and classic adventure game object interaction: examining and collecting objects and using them to solve puzzles...

Penumbra: Black Plague is a continuation of the main story, and it has apparently been nominated by the Writers' Guild of Great Britain for Best Video Game Script. The gameplay is essentially the same, except for the preference of stealth over combat seeing as how there is virtually none.

I'm currently <s>downloading</s> acquiring it by "special means". Anyone played it, and if so, care to share your thoughts on it?

If this is the game I'm thinking of then I was reading about it not long ago, it's supposed to be quite scary.

I hear this also, because of the surprise factor, mainly.

That quote reads as "cute scary" 'cause of my dodgey screen.

That is the scariest thing of all.
